Vivo finally unveiled the world’s first smartphone equipped with in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone. The best part is — its ready-to-produce, which I think means we’re about to see it soon on their flagships.

The phone in question looks to sport a 6-inch display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and very small bezels. The in-display fingerprint scanning tech is embedded below the display, allowing users to unlock the handset through the front, instead of the back like most handsets with these dimensions.

Vivo has partnered with Synaptics to develop the technology. It makes use of OLED displays with the scanner peeking in between pixels to identify your unique fingerprint. Both claim that this is twice as fast as 3D facial recognition, requiring only one touch to unlock the phone. Those who have tried the pre-production model at the CES 2018 mentioned that it is slower than regular fingerprint scanners, but not to the point of being problematic or cumbersome.

Now that Vivo officially unveiled the technology, it’s only a matter of time before we start seeing it used on smartphones.
