To see how good the iPhone 4S is in taking videos, someone tried to compare it with the Canon 5D Mark II, one of the most formidable cameras out there and one that has been used in making movies and shorts. The author calls it a fair test between the two devices, shooting scenes at the same time side by side which was made possible by a self-constructed rig. Exposure, shutter speed, frame rate and picture style were matched as close as possible between the two cameras.
Here are the settings used for the test:
iPhone 4S
– AE.AF locked. That’s all you have!
Canon 5D MKII
– Canon 50mm 1.4
– ISO 160 – 640 (varied per shot to match the iPhone)
– F 7-22 (varied per shot to match the iPhone)
– Shutter 1/60th
– Auto WB
– Standard Picture Style
– 1080p 30
And here now is the video showing shots on both the iPhone 4S and the Canon 5D Mark II.

The video on the Canon 5D Mark II is still obviously better than that on the iPhone 4S. It is particularly obvious on frames where a subject is on close up like the one seen below.
Overall though, the video from the iPhone 4S still looks impressive considering it is something taken from a phone. It’s amazing at how Apple was able to cram a very good camera setup in the iPhone 4S.
