Boostcase Hybrid iPhone Case and Battery Sleeve Review

For a gadget as expensive as an iPhone, one is hardpressed to find a protective case that’s tough enough to secure it from bumps and scratches.  And for a gadget as power hungry as an iPhone, one also wishes its battery would pump out more juice than what it normally delivers.  But what if you can get these two things in one package?  That’s what Bootscase offers.

The Boostcase is a hybrid accessory.  It’s an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S case and battery pack in one.  With the Boostcase, you get a slim fit iPhone case and a snap-on battery sleeve.  You can therefore use the case separately when you feel that you don’t need extra battery juice. You can then easily snap the battery pack on when you anticipate you’ll need a power source backup.

The design of the Boostcase is its major selling point.  The way it combines a phone case and battery pack is a clever idea.  The phone case can be used as a standalone accessory and its design is simply effective.  The finish is quite solid and the build feels equally solid.  Using it gives you the feeling that your phone will be free from scratches whatever you do.  The case is decidedly strong it can keep your iPhone secure even after those accidental drops.

The basic design isn’t really novel — it looks like other iPhone cases out there. It snaps on the sides with the top and bottom left open, giving easy access for the buttons and ports.  It of course leaves openings for the volume rocker and the silent button found on the left side of the iPhone. The back part shows a gaping hole for the camera lens and flash and a pear-shaped opening slot that shows the Apple logo.  So far, the case is seems ordinary.

The pear-shaped hole at the back of the iPhone case is what makes the Boostcase different from other iPhone cases.  The battery pack snaps on through this opening through a circular hinge, simultaneously connecting the 30-pin connector at the bottom to the iPhone itself.

The detachable extended battery sleeve is where the extra juice comes from.  It has a glossy white finish that befits its premium design.  The construction is solid, and the fit is excellent.  The battery sleeve actually quite slim considering that it hosts a battery pack.  The bottom of the battery sleeve adds extra length to the iPhone when snapped on.  It is where the 30-pin connector is found and that is how it transfers the battery juice to the phone.  Underneath the battery sleeve are 4 light indicators that blink when the battery sleeve is being charged.  Beside the light indicators is a power button and at the bottom is a micro-USB slot.

The Boostcase battery sleeve snaps on to the iPhone case through the previously mentioned pear-shaped hole.  The execution is quite simple.  You just look for the hole at the back of the case, match it with the circular latch on found on the battery sleeve, and slide the latter upwards.  It snaps on snugly and the dock-like feature in the battery sleeve simultaneously connects with the iPhone’s 30-pin connector.

When the case and battery sleeve are attached to the iPhone, it adds considerable thickness and feels unusually big at first.  Don’t worry though as it eventually gets comfortable.  Compared to other battery sleeves in the market, the Boostcase is still relatively slimmer and also considerably lighter.

So how is the Boostcase when it comes to the thing that matters most – providing extra battery life to the iPhone?  The Boostcase promises to double your iPhone’s battery life and the simple fact is, it delivers on this promise.  Charging the 1900mAh battery sleeve is done through the micro-USB slot and you can do this by connecting the supplied USB cable to your computer or by connecting the cable to your iPhone charger.  You can charge the Boostcase battery sleeve alone, or even with it’s attached to the iPhone. Charging time is 3 hours when the battery sleeve is detached, and about 6 hours when the iPhone is connected.

Like i said, the Boostcase battery sleeve doubles the battery life of the iPhone.  This is what is promised and this is exactly what I got from this accessory.  The Boostcase hybrid case is priced at P3,550.  It is available at Beyond the Box, PowerMac Center, Digital Hub, Digital Walker and Technoholics stores.
