Nokia Asha 308 and Asha 309 Handsets Announced

 

While all the attention in the smartphone market is currently focused on the iPhone 5 and the other heavyweights from the Android and Windows Phone platforms, Nokia quietly unveiled two new phones in its Asha Touch line – the Asha 308 and Asha 309.  The phones in the Asha Touch line are now classified as smartphones according to Nokia.  They were only considered as feature phones before but according to research companies and analysts such as GfK and IDC, the Asha phones, with its open environment for third-party application development, earned full smartphone classification.

The Nokia Asha 308 and 309 are positioned as the cheapest capacitive touch phones from Nokia, both priced at only $99 (about P4,200).  These new handsets are aimed at first-time users of touch phones and those who are new to mobile browsing.  The phones have the Nokia Xpress Browser which enables up to 90% more efficient mobile browsing and Nokia Nearby for local search.

The Nokia Asha 308 and Asha 309 both feature a 3-inch capacitive display, Series 40 , 800MHz processor, 1,110mAh battery, 20MB internal storage with 2GB microSD (expandable to 32GB), 2-megapixel rear camera, EDGE connectivity.  The phones differ in some features.  The Nokia Asha 308, for instance, has an Easy Swap dual-SIM feature that’s not present in the Asha 309.  The Asha 309, on the other hand, has Wi-Fi connectivity that is not available on the other handset. The phones also come with the free gift of 40 premium EA games and social features such as standalone Facebook and Twitter clients, the Nokia Messaging Service, and video streaming through the browser from sites like YouTube.

The Nokia Asha 308 and 309 will ship during the fourth quarter of 2012.  The specific date of availability in the Philippines is not yet known.
