Cherry Mobile One unboxed and fiddled with. My first impressions and Antutu benchmark.

The Cherry Mobile One and the MyPhone Uno were the first Android One devices to debut in the Philippines. As luck would have it, Google was gracious enough to give all of us a unit to try out. I was able to get the Cherry Mobile One. Naturally, I was quite excited to unbox it. Let’s get started with our hands on and first impressions.

PACKAGE CONTENTS:

Talk about value for money! For only PHP3,999, the Cherry Mobile One comes with your usual list of accessories. For the price, I was half expecting it to come with just the charger. Besides the unit, USB cable and travel charger, you also get a set of earphones and a free 8GB microSD card. Mine didn’t come with the SD card, but the Cherry Mobile announced on their FB page that it will.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

Of the two Android One devices introduced, I personally liked the Cherry Mobile One better. The design looks sleeker and I love the minimalist approach they took with this one. It feels solid and the bit of weight positively lends to its impressive build quality. The removable back case has a matte silver finish that’s nice to hold and isn’t slippery on the hand.

As expected, the Cherry Mobile One comes with Android 5.1 Lollipop and it is great. Google’s Material Design brings a fresh look to the OS that you won’t find in older versions of the OS. Notice that it also features the soft keys with Lollipop icons. I really think this should be available to both local and international smartphones.

Of course, the Cherry Mobile One uses Google’s proprietary Google Now Launcher. It’s fast and smooth.

For those who like benchmarks, I’m happy to say that the Cherry Mobile One does quite well for a device that costs less than 4k. It scored an impressive 19,958 points in Antutu Benchmark. In comparison, my Moto G (almost stock) got a score of only 17,558 at the time I reviewed it (hmm. I just remembered, the Moto G (first gen) got updated to Lollipop as well. I’ll post an updated Antutu score here and on my review soon.)

Well, that’s it for now. I’ll continue to poke and play with the Cherry Mobile One to get a better feel of the device. If things don’t get too busy with my day job, I’ll post the full review of the device next week.
