vivo V23 5G camera review: Best for selfies

vivo has always made good camera phones. The vivo X70 5G is proof of that. Their latest midranger, the vivo V23 5G, is no different.

On its own, it’s already a very capable device with a gorgeous color-changing Photochromic design, a 90Hz AMOLED flat display, and a MediaTek Dimensity 920 5G SoC.

For photography, it’s even better. It is packed with a 50MP dual selfie camera system with dual-tone spotlight flash and 64MP triple rear cameras.

This time, we’re here to take a close look at the vivo V23 5G’s cameras and why they’re so special.

Selfie Cameras

The vivo V23 5G boasts dual front cameras highlighted by a 50MP sensor with two LED flashes called Dual-tone Spotlight Flash, and an 8MP ultra-wide with a 105-degree field of view. It also comes with an eye autofocus feature, something most other front cameras on smartphones don’t have.

The 50MP front camera is backed by a customized JNV sensor with the latest ISOCELL 3.0 technology. The sensor can capture more light from more angles, thereby improving light sensitivity compared to others within the same range. Images taken with the phone’s selfie cameras are more colorful and sharper even in low-light conditions.

Dual-tone Spotlight Flash

This makes for crisp selfies with good detail, better colors, and accurate skin tones with less noise.

In low light, the subject has fairly good exposure and contrast. There is a slight loss in detail and sharpness, though, but overall, the image still looks good.

The Dual-tone Spotlight Flash does a good job of lighting up the subject in very low light, be it as a fill light or as the main source. You can see the subject is sharper with more details. The skin tone also looks good and accurate.

The camera app also comes with beauty mode, while creative folks would enjoy the various filters under the Style tab. As always, we recommend going easy on the filters to minimize that plastic look.

Rear Cameras

For the rear cameras, the vivo V23 5G comes with a 64MP main, 8MP ultra-wide up to 2x optical zoom, and a 2MP depth.

The main camera is backed by a Samsung ISOCELL GW1 image sensor with big 0.8μm pixels and an f/1.9 aperture lens, supported by EIS or electronic image stabilization. EIS uses the phone’s accelerometer to detect movement and makes adjustments accordingly to stabilize the shot. It also comes with a Super Night Mode and Super Night Video.

The main camera can shoot up to 1080p/60fps and 4K/40fps videos. It is also supported by EIS which you can set to Standard or Ultra, or disable altogether.

The 64MP main camera pixel bins to 16MP. It does a good job in brightly lit areas. Image quality is great with pleasant colors. Dynamic range is okay, as is the level of detail.

Indoor shots are also decent, despite some images looking over-processed. Images are still detailed with plenty of color saturation.

The ultra-wide camera, on the other hand, is average to good, depending on the lighting. However, it’s more than enough for social media, which is good enough for most of us.

In low light, images are good with some noise and artifacts creeping in. You still get good detail and colors, which is overall pleasant.

Final Thoughts

The vivo V23 5G is already a good device in its own right with a set of quality specs. For the most part, you’re getting a color-changing phone with an iconic design, a 90Hz AMOLED display, a Dimensity 920 5G chipset, a beefy 256GB storage, and 44W fast charging.

However, I do think its best asset is its cameras. The 64MP rear shooter is decent and good for the most part, but what truly makes the phone special is its selfie camera.

The customized 50MP JNV sensor takes it up a notch in terms of performance, adding value beyond its price tag. It takes good selfies that easily outshines its competitors. Adding to its versatility, you also get the Dual-tone Spotlight Flash which can light up your selfies should you need it.

So there you have it. If you’re looking for a good selfie phone with the looks and performance to match, check out the vivo V23 5G.
