Valve confirmed plans to bring SteamOS, the operating system powering the Steam Deck, to rival devices like the ASUS ROG Ally.
This news comes after some users spotted “extra ROG Ally keys” in the latest SteamOS patch notes. While this initially sparked speculation of Steam Deck-like functionality within the Windows Steam client, Valve designer Lawrence Yang clarified it signifies broader plans.
“The team is continuing to work on adding support for additional handhelds on SteamOS,” Yang told The Verge. However, it is still under development. While Valve is making “steady progress,” Yang emphasized that SteamOS isn’t yet ready for an out-of-the-box experience on non-Steam Deck devices.
A general release of SteamOS 3 is also in the works, potentially allowing users to install it on non-handheld PCs. Similar to the handheld support, this release remains in development.
Yang also mentioned support for dual-booting Windows on the Steam Deck, but that remains unclear at this time.
