In a keynote at Ericsson’s Imagine Live 2024 event, PLDT Chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan suggested that it might be time to retire the term “digital.” In a world where digital technology has become the norm, the word itself may now be outdated.
“Nowadays, if you use the word or adjective ‘digital’, you’re probably ten years behind the times,” Pangilinan stated. He emphasized that in a world where technology is ubiquitous, the term “digital” is redundant.
Pangilinan’s remarks came as PLDT and its wireless unit Smart Communications continue to invest in expanding their 5G network and exploring new applications for the technology. The company recently launched the Smart ZTE Blade A75 5G, its most affordable 5G device, making it more accessible to Filipinos.
While acknowledging the progress made in 5G deployment, Pangilinan also cautioned against becoming complacent. He stressed the importance of staying ahead of the curve and continuously innovating to meet the evolving needs of customers.
“We need to stay current, to be attuned with the times,” he said. “In this era, telco is not just technology for us, it’s a lifeline.”
Pangilinan encouraged PLDT and Smart to focus on delivering a seamless and reliable customer experience, rather than getting bogged down by technical details. He envisioned a future where networks are integrated with artificial intelligence, offering personalized and intelligent services.
“Imagine what our networks can become when they are fully integrated with AI, when connections aren’t just about speed but about intelligence, adaptability and personalization. Imagine a world where our networks become a platform for innovation, not just conduits for data but ecosystems that enable new industries, new products, new services, and new ways of life,” Pangilinan added.
Ericsson’s Imagine Live 2024 event featured discussions on various topics related to 5G technology, including monetization opportunities and use cases.
PLDT and Smart executives, also participated in panel discussions and presentations, sharing their insights and experiences.
