The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has temporarily suspended the registration of e-bikes and e-trikes to conduct a more thorough safety assessment.
On the news program “24 Oras”, LTO chief Vigor Mendoza cited the need to carefully review the safety standards and regulations that govern electric vehicles. The move comes as several local governments have implemented their ordinances regarding the use of e-vehicles.
However, LTO clarified that its decision will not affect existing LGUs. If an LGU has banned the use of e-vehicles, then that prohibition will remain in effect. This means that e-bikes and e-trikes may still be restricted in some areas, even though their national registration is suspended.
Earlier this year, the LTO proposed a system for registering e-vehicles. In April, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) issued a ban on e-bikes and e-trikes on major roads in the capital region.
The LTO’s suspension of e-bike and e-trike registrations is expected to remain in place until the agency completes its safety review.
