PLDT has completed the cable laying for the Apricot cable system branches in Baler, Aurora, and Digos, Davao. This will enhance PLDT’s ability to handle the country’s growing data traffic and supports the Philippines’ goal of becoming a major transit hub for global hyperscalers.
The Apricot cable system is a 12,000-kilometer-long, high-capacity fiber-optic submarine cable designed to meet the increasing telecommunications traffic demands in the Asia Pacific region. With a system design capacity of over 211Tbps, the Apricot cable will significantly boost PLDT’s international data traffic capacity.
The cable system runs directly from Singapore to Japan via the Pacific Ocean, offering alternative routes for telecommunication companies, avoiding the usual West Philippine Sea waters. It is supported by two landing points in the Philippines, located in Baler and Digos.
Connecting Singapore to Japan with branches to the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Guam, the Apricot cable system serves as an Intra-Asia Hub point for over-the-top (OTT) services and complements other intra-Asia and transpacific submarine systems. It is expected to increase PLDT’s international capacity by 33%, reaching over 140Tbps.
The international submarine cable system will support the growth of data traffic and provide resiliency to PLDT’s domestic network between Luzon and Mindanao.
