The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has issued a public reminder that private vehicles do not need to display “Not for Hire” signs.
In a recent Facebook post, the MMDA said that private vehicles used for personal travel or transporting the owner’s goods are not required to show any signage. These vehicles are not considered public transport and are allowed on the road without a franchise.
However, the agency warned that using a private vehicle to carry passengers or goods for a fee, without a franchise from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), is illegal.
Vehicles used for public transport without a valid franchise are considered “colorum” and may be penalized.
The MMDA issued a reminder to clear up confusion and help enforce transport rules. It also aims to stop the illegal use of private vehicles as unregistered public transport.
