Children and relatives of public officials, dubbed “nepo babies” online, can now consider filing cybercrime complaints if they feel harassed or bashed on social media. This was confirmed by Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, who said that cyber libel laws could apply to certain posts depending on their content.
The term “nepo baby” has gained attention in the Philippines in posts criticizing the families of politicians and contractors. Many online users have shared memes and old videos, accusing these individuals of benefiting from government influence or public funds.
Some of the criticism has been linked to ongoing debates about flood control projects and alleged corruption.
Remulla explained that not all online posts are illegal, but those that are malicious or defamatory may be grounds for legal action. He encouraged anyone who feels unfairly targeted to file complaints at their local prosecutor’s office.
The statement comes amid growing public scrutiny of political families and their perceived privileges.
