OpenAI partners with AMD to power its next-gen AI infrastructure

AMD expects the deal to boost earnings and revenue.

ChatGPT parent company OpenAI is partnering with AMD to build out its future AI systems. The deal covers up to 6 gigawatts of AMD GPUs, rolled out over several years. It starts with 1 gigawatt of Instinct MI450 chips in the second half of 2026.

This follows OpenAI’s September announcement of a strategic partnership with Nvidia, which includes a $100 billion investment and plans to deploy 10 gigawatts of Nvidia systems. Together, these moves signal OpenAI’s push to scale its compute capacity for next-generation models.

AMD now becomes a core compute partner, expanding on earlier work with the MI300X and MI350X GPUs. The companies plan to co-develop rack-scale AI solutions and future hardware generations.

Under this definitive agreement, OpenAI will work with AMD as a core strategic compute partner to drive large-scale deployments of AMD technology starting with the AMD Instinct MI450 series and rack-scale AI solutions and extending to future generations.

AMD expects the deal to bring in tens of billions in revenue and boost earnings. It also positions the company as a major player in the race to support global AI demand.
