Here’s something we can get behind. Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez has banned the use of sirens and blinkers, commonly known as “wang-wang,” by officials of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and its attached agencies.
In a memo dated October 13, Lopez also revoked all protocol license plates issued to DOTr officials. These special plates are often used to avoid traffic and get out of violations. The Land Transportation Office (LTO) will oversee the collection and ensure compliance.
The directive follows the government’s Administrative Order No. 18, which restricts the use of sirens and special plates by public officials. The goal is to promote fairness, restore discipline, and prevent abuse of authority on the road.
The order applies to all DOTr offices, sectoral divisions, and attached corporations. LTO has also been tasked with reviewing current plate issuances and updating its inventory.

This move is meant to push for accountability and equal treatment for all motorists. Hopefully, we see other agencies adopt the same protocol. Stay tuned for updates.
