OpenAI will soon allow mature content on ChatGPT. Starting in December, users who verify their age can access adult material, including erotica.
CEO Sam Altman announced the change on X, saying this follows OpenAI’s goal to “treat adult users like adults.”
ChatGPT was made restrictive to protect users with mental health concerns. But Altman admitted this made the chatbot less useful for others. He said OpenAI now has better tools to manage those risks. Because of that, the company will relax some limits.
Moreover, the company also plans to add new features. Users will be able to adjust ChatGPT’s tone and personality. They can make it more human-like, add emojis, or even make it sound more like a friend. These changes will be optional.
“If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing),” said Altman.
The update comes as other tech companies adjust their content filters. Meta recently announced PG-13-style limits for users under 18 on Instagram and its AI tools.
