Major AWS server problem took down the internet for a day

The outage disrupted services like Roblox, Canva, Snapchat, and Reddit.

On Monday, Amazon Web Services (AWS) had a major outage that affected millions of users around the world. Thousands of websites and apps went offline for several hours, showing how much the internet depends on just a few cloud providers.

Amazon said the cause was a Domain Name System (DNS) error. DNS works like the internet’s address book. When it fails, applications can’t find the services they’re trying to reach, which causes major connection issues across multiple services.

The results were immediate and widespread. Services for social media, online banking, gaming, and digital learning were hit

Popular platforms like Snapchat, Reddit, Roblox, and Canva went offline. Even Amazon’s own sites, such as Prime Video and Ring smart devices, suffered issues. Learning tools like Canvas also stopped working.

By Monday evening, Amazon confirmed that the problem was resolved and all services were running normally again.

The disruption raises important questions about the risks of depending so heavily on a single piece of global internet infrastructure.
