This simple app checks if you’re still alive

A viral Chinese app called Sileme (which translates to Are You Dead?) is making headlines for its unusual, but practical use case. The app has one simple function — confirm if you’re just alive. Users need only tap on a button to check in every two days. If you miss a check‑in, it automatically alerts an emergency contact.

The app first launched in May last year, but only recently climbed to the top of China’s paid app charts. Its popularity highlights a growing concern among people living alone, a group expected to reach 200 million households in China by 2030.

For many, it offers peace of mind that someone will be notified if something goes wrong. Users range from office workers and students to older adults and those dealing with isolation. Outside China, the app is listed as Demumu.

In the Philippines, the app could find a role as solo living becomes more common. Reports show that around 49 percent of Filipinos are single, while The Global State of Social Connections notes that 57 percent feel lonely, well above the global average of 24 percent.

Tools like this will not solve loneliness, but they can offer reassurance that someone will be alerted if something goes wrong.
