SKK Mobile Kraken Unboxing and First Impressions

SKK Mobile wants to dominate the octa-core game with the simultaneous release of two phones packing octa-core CPUs.  The first one is the Marian S1, the unboxing of which I already featured in an earlier post.   The other phone is the Kraken, a similarly capable Android handset in terms of specs and features.

The SKK Mobile Kraken is similar to the Marian S1 in most respects.  It packs a 5-inch IPS display, a 1.7GHz octa-core processor, an 8GB internal storage with microSD slot expansion up to 32GB, 1GB RAM, 8MP main camera with flash, 5MP front-facing camera, 2000mAh battery and a host of connectivity options that include Wi-Fi, 3G and Bluetooth.   What separates the SKK Mobile Kraken from the Marian S1 is design.  The Kraken is a bit thicker than the ultraslim Marian S1 but is no less attractive.

The Kraken has a finish that reminds me of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and it’s a good thing.  The side of the phone has a metallic silver trimming and has curved edges that fit well in the hand.  Up close, you will see dotted accents on the bezel and the back cover and the effect is great.  The overall appeal of the Kraken is premium but the price is surprisingly affordable.  Just like the Marian S1, the Kraken is also priced below Php10,000.  This is definitely a pleasant surprise since at this affordable price, you will get a phone that runs an octa-core CPU and features a 5-inch IPS HD display.

If you are curious as to how the SKK Mobile Kraken performs, initial impressions suggest that the phone will deliver even when you play graphics-intensive games.  The phone is zippy and apps load fast, thanks to the highly capable hardware and an equally capable Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.  KitKat would surely do the Kraken a huge favor but it is already sufficiently fast with Jelly Bean.

The full review will follow soon but until then, here are a few more unboxing photos of the SKK Mobile Kraken.
