Smart is rolling out a major network expansion project to boost LTE and 3G reach, as well as improve call, SMS and data quality. The project, which will happen over the next three months, will quadruple LTE coverage and double 3G coverage in Metro Manila.
To make this happen, the telco is deploying new base station equipment that use low frequency bands (700 MHz, 850 MHz, and 900 MHz) in 2,500 cell sites across the metro. As you may well know, low frequency bands can cover larger areas as well as provide better indoor signals.
“Smart is rolling out the fastest and most powerful mobile data network in the country, and we are focused on improving indoor coverage since we know that people use mobile internet services mostly indoors, particularly in Metro Manila – in their homes, offices, restaurants, coffee shops, and the like,” said Joachim Horn, chief technology and information advisor for PLDT and Smart.
The rollout also includes improvements to 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz bands as well. This will help increase the capacity of Smart cell sites, allowing it to handle more calls, text and data traffic.
Three-year Improvement Program
The network expansion project is part of Smart’s three year plan to accelerate LTE performance and quality. It started in Boracay and Metro Davao, and currently ongoing in Metro Cebu. The plan includes the use of the 700 MHz frequency band the telco obtained (through a co-use arrangement with Globe) from San Miguel Corporation.
