DreamWorks to release animated film based on Philippine mythology

DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures have announced their latest animated feature, Forgotten Island, an original story deeply rooted in Philippine mythology. Scheduled to premiere on September 25, 2026, the film aims to introduce Filipino folklore to a global audience through a vibrant, comedic adventure.

The movie is billed as a “broad party comedy adventure”, which will blend humor, magic, and Filipino cultural elements. While details remain undisclosed, the film’s focus on Philippine folklore is expected to leave a lasting impression on viewers, highlighting myths and legends rarely explored in mainstream media.

Forgotten Island will be directed by Januel Mercado, known for his work as co-director of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and head of story for The Croods: A New Age. Mercado collaborates with Joel Crawford, an acclaimed filmmaker whose previous partnerships with Mercado have been widely praised.

The film is scheduled for release during a crowded box-office window in late September 2026, arriving shortly after Sony’s Resident Evil reboot and an untitled Warner Bros. project.

With a fresh perspective on Filipino mythology, Forgotten Island promises to be a standout release in 2026. Stay tuned for more details.
