Lego Smart Brick debuts with interactive Smart Play system

This is one of the company’s biggest updates in years.

Lego just announced the Lego Smart Brick and its new Smart Play system at CES 2026. This is one of the company’s biggest updates in years, bringing sensors and interactivity to the classic bricks we all know.

The Smart Play system is built around three components. First are Smart Bricks, which look like regular Lego pieces but pack sensors like accelerometers and light detectors. These can trigger sounds or lights depending on how you use them. Then there are Smart Minifigures, each with built-in sensors, speakers, and wireless charging. Finally, Smart Tags add extra features to builds, making play more responsive.

The idea is simple: keep play screen-free while adding new ways to interact. Lego says this opens up more creative possibilities without taking away from the traditional building experience.

The first sets to feature Smart Play will roll out on March 1, 2026, starting with three Lego Star Wars kits. These include Luke’s Red Five X-Wing, Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter, and a larger Throne Room Duel set.

Each comes with Smart Bricks, Smart Tags, and Smart Minifigures to showcase what the system can do. Pre-order starts on January 9 in select markets.

With the Lego Smart Brick, the company is looking to blend classic building with innovative and interactive tech.
