Duolingo brings Chess PvP mode to Android

Duolingo has rolled out its Chess Player-vs-Player (PvP) mode on Android, following its first release on iOS late last year. The update makes the course available to more learners, especially in mobile-first markets like Indonesia and the Philippines.

The Chess course uses Duolingo’s “learning by doing” style. Most lessons are puzzle-based, letting beginners practice moves before jumping into mini games and full matches.

The PvP mode matches players with opponents of similar skill levels, making competitive play less daunting for those still learning.

Duolingo will add more features soon. These include play-with-friends options, game review tools, and advanced chess lessons. A web version is also in development.

The Chess course is free and available in several languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese.

Alongside math and music, chess is now part of Duolingo’s growing catalog of gamified courses.
