SmartNet Now an Android App, Free to Download from Android Market

I just came from Smart Communications’ event where it was announced, among others, that the SmartNet is now a free Android application.  SmartNet used to be tied up to the Netphone 701 and other SmartNet handsets like the Samsung Galaxy Y.  Smart has decided to take the SmartNet ecosystem to the Android Market in order to give it a wider reach.  This will be convenient and useful to Smart subscribers who have their own Android phones but would otherwise be unable to use SmartNet without buying a SmartNet-specific phone from Smart.

Asked whether the SmartNet services that were free on the Netphone 701 and the Samsung Galaxy Y Netphone edition such as Chat and Social Hub will still be free on the SmartNet App, representatives from Smart said that they will still be free.   For other services, the user will be charged the normal browsing rates.  Smart representatives said that the SmartNet app will soon be available on the iOS platform and in fact, an iPhone running SmartNet was shown to us at the event.

The SmartNet app has been updated from its Netphone 701 version.  It now looks more polished and the functionality and features have been streamlined.  Here are a few screenshots of the SmartNet App from the Android Market.

I like the theme of the SmartNet app since it goes well with Android Ice Cream Sandwich OS.  Here is how it looks on my Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

I will try to post a review of the app.  You may download the SmartNet app from the Android Market on your phone or you may go here.
