Google and LG Announce the Nexus 4 Android Phone

It’s not only Apple that’s bad at keeping secrets.  Google’s latest Nexus phone, the Nexus 4, also got extensive coverage on tech blogs before the official announcement.  The Nexus 4 is the product of Google’s collaboration with LG.  The previous Google phone was the Galaxy Nexus made by Samsung which was generally regarded as an excellent phone.

The official specs of the Nexus 4 are quite impressive on paper.  The Nexus 4 features a stunning 4.7-inch True HD IPS Plus display with 1,280 x 768 resolution (320ppi) covered by Gorilla Glass 2 and supported by something called Zerogap Touch technology.  The display’s edges are curved, allowing smooth touch operation.

The rest of the specs make the Nexus 4 a super phone of sorts.  It runs a fast Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor paired with 2GB of RAM and packs an 8-megapixel rear camera with Photo Sphere, Google’s answer to Apple’s panoramic mode.

The Nexus 4 comes with Android 4.2, still called Jelly Bean, and the latest version of Google Now.  Of course you also get the latest version of Google Maps with turn-by-turn GPS navigation, live traffic info, integrated driving, walking and public transit directions, 3D Maps with satellite imagery and other features like Street View and Indoor Maps.

Nexus 4 is sold unlocked and is GSM and HSPA+ compatible.  There’s no LTE connectivity so this may be a deal breaker for some.  Like the Galaxy Nexus, though, it has NFC capability.  The Nexus 4 will be available in 8GB and 16GB versions starting November 13 in the US, UK, Canada, Germany, France, Spain and Australia.  Availability in Europe, Central/South Americas, Asia, and the Middle East will begin from the end of November according to Google.
