Filipinos are known to be big basketball fans. The popularity of the PBA and the NBA in the country is a testament to this. With the ongoing FIBA Asia Championship 2013 tournament currently underway, the popularity of basketball has apparently been elevated some more.
If you are a smartphone owner and you want to get basketball news fast, you may want to try out the new PinoyHoops app. The makers brand it as the most comprehensive basketball mobile application to date. The app is backed by Smart Communications Inc. (Smart) and its subsidiary Voyager Innovations Inc. (Voyager). The mobile app gives users access to real-time updates and scores, game alerts and highlights, player stats, standings, and schedules, among a host of other features, straight from their mobile devices.
“The launch of PinoyHoops coincides perfectly with the country’s hosting of the 27th FIBA Asia Championship (2013) where millions of Filipinos are rooting for Gilas Pilipinas to win it all,” said Orlando B. Vea, chief wireless advisor at Smart. “With the mobile app, Smart is proud to bring hardcourt basketball action and updates closer to the millions of basketball fans not only here but also abroad.”
“With a boatload of features, PinoyHoops is a perfect companion for the millions of basketball-loving Filipinos,” said Mitch Padua, Head for Internet Products at Smart. “With 24/7 access to league information and the ability to connect to your favorite players and fellow basketball fans via your social network, this app truly helps enrich the overall experience of basketball fans, enabling them to live more.”
PinoyHoops is now available for downloaded from the Google Play online store. The good news is, the app is free. This is indeed a good way of letting basketball fans follow their favorite teams and players and get live status updates from basketball personalities. The app is tightly integrated with social networking sites so sharing news and updates should be easy.
Pinoy basketball fans of the PBA and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) can also get their daily dose of basketball action as the mobile app also covers the two local basketball leagues. Smart has collaborated with Sports5, the sports arm of TV5, for content to be served on the PinoyHoops app. Hopefully the app can also feature the UAAP but since it is covered by ABS-CBN, UAAP news may never be featured on PinoyHoops.
This is indeed good news for Android users but the question is, when will the iOS version for iPhones and iPads be made available?
