This is indeed good news. PLDT, Smart Wifi and Google recently signed a partnership to provide free Internet connectivity to Filipinos across the country.

“We are happy to partner with Smart Wifi in giving more Filipinos access to new opportunities and learning tools through the internet—empowering them in a meaningful way,” said Kenneth Lingan, Google Philippines Country Manager.

The service will take advantage of Smart Wifi’s nationwide infrastructure to reach as many citizens as possible through the telco’s growing number of Smart Wifi hubs.

According to studies led by the World Bank, there is a link between GDP growth and increased Internet usage, making access to free Wi-Fi services critical to the improvement of the global economy.

“Technology is a great equalizer of opportunities and as the country’s premier ICT and digital services provider, we are constantly looking for ways to innovate and uplift the everyday experiences of our customers,” said PLDT and Smart Chief Revenue Officer and ePLDT President & CEO Eric Alberto.

To date, over 63% of Filipinos have access to Internet services. PLDT and Google hopes that this collaboration will fast track the country’s digital transformation and make the Philippines a global player.
