OPPO files patent for side popping selfie camera

Are we ready for a side pop-up selfie cameras? OPPO seems to think so.

OPPO has recently filed a patent for a side-mounted pop-up camera for smartphones at the China National Intellectual Property Administration or CNIPA. This is a direct result of phone manufacturers looking for ways to achieve a full-screen smartphone.

The patent shows images of a motorized camera system where it pops-up from the right side of a smartphone with a full screen design. The camera is tucked away and sits flush at the side, where it is part of a module that also houses dual rear cameras.

Take note that this is just a reference image, meaning there is no real device. But it might as well look like it. It also shows a USB Type-C and an audio port, as well as a single speaker grill.

Since this is just a patent filing, there’s no assurance that it will become reality. But it does say more about OPPO as a company — that they’re willing to push the envelope when it comes to innovation.
