Smart still fastest median download speed, says Ookla

The telco has maintained its lead in mobile speed for the whole of 2023

Smart Communications continues to lead the Philippine mobile network industry in terms of speed, according to the latest report from Ookla.

Ookla’s Q4 2023 Internet Performance Report on the state of the Philippines’ mobile networks shows that Smart has the fastest median download speeds with 37.64 Mbps, followed by Globe with 26.44 Mbps, and DITO with 19.74 Mbps.

This also means that Smart has maintained its lead in mobile speed for the whole of 2023, as well as for the previous two years. Smart received the Speedtest Award for Best Mobile Network from Ookla for Q1-Q2 and Q3-Q4 2022, and Q1-Q2 2023.

Among the cities in the Philippines, Manila has the fastest mobile download speed with 37.24 Mbps, ranking 88th in the world. It is followed by Davao City with 21.96 Mbps, ranking 121st.

However, the Philippines still lags behind other countries in terms of mobile speed. The mobile median speed in the Philippines last December 2023 was 28.12 Mbps for downloads and 6.89 Mbps for uploads, resulting in the country ranking 86th in the world, down two spots from last year.

The country with the fastest mobile median download speed is the United Arab Emirates with 303.21 Mbps, followed by Qatar with 244.44 Mbps.

Ookla, the global leader in internet testing and analysis, uses data from its popular Speedtest app to measure the internet performance of millions of users worldwide. The report covers the period from October to December 2023.
