MMDA, UP Diliman partner to develop eco-friendly ferry system for Pasig River

The project includes the creation of a fully electric ferry boat.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) partners with the University of the Philippines Diliman (UP Diliman) to develop an eco-friendly ferry system for the Pasig River.

The Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed in the presence of officials from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute (EEEI) of UP’s College of Engineering.

DOST has committed to funding the initiative, while the MMDA will collaborate with EEEI for the project’s implementation, which will be pilot-tested on the Pasig River Ferry System.

MMDA Deputy Chairman Usec. Frisco San Juan Jr. expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential to transform the Pasig River Ferry into a sustainable mode of transport. “Aking pinapasalamatan ang UP Diliman, DOST at iba pang partner agencies para sa proyektong ito dahil pangarap ko na maging world class, clean, at environment-friendly ang Pasig River Ferry.”

(I extend my gratitude to UP Diliman, DOST, and other partner agencies for this project, as it is my dream to see the Pasig River Ferry become world-class, clean, and environment-friendly.”

The MOA was also signed by DOST Secretary Renato Solidium, UP Diliman Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Jerwin Agpaoa, and Dr. Lew Andrew Tria, Director and Project Leader of the EEEI E-Boat Project.

The project aims to design an eco-friendly ferry system that will address the increasing traffic on Metro Manila’s roads. It includes the creation of a fully electric ferry boat and on-shore charging infrastructure along the Pasig River.

This initiative is seen as a significant step towards reducing the city’s reliance on road-based transportation, thereby cutting down on pollution and traffic jams. The project’s success could pave the way for similar sustainable transport solutions in other urban areas across the country.
