Metro Manila sees surge in motorcycle-related road crashes, reports MMDA

There is an alarming rise in motorcycle-related accidents in Metro Manila. The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reported over 31,000 incidents in the past year alone. The numbers underscore the urgency of the agency’s recently established Motorcycle Riding Academy (MRA).

The data from the Road Safety Unit is stark: motorcycle-related road crashes swelled from 26,599 in 2022 to 31,186 in the previous year. The first quarter of this year alone saw 4,068 accidents involving motorcycles.

As part of the MMDA’s efforts to reduce motorcycle-related accidents and fatalities in Metro Manila, the MRA was established in Pasig City in 2023. The academy aims to instill discipline among motorcycle riders to enhance road safety.

The MRA is open to all aspiring motorcyclists and those seeking to improve their emergency response skills. The academy offers free enrollment at its office on Doña Julia Vargas cor. Meralco Avenue or through online registration.

How to join the Motorcycle Riding Academy

If you are interested in joining the MRA, here are some of the requirements and procedures that you need to follow:

  • Participants must be able to balance and ride a bicycle.
  • You must have your own standard full-face helmet, full-finger motorcycle gloves, and rain gear. A reflective safety vest is optional. Motorcycles will be provided by the Academy.
  • Those who complete the Basic Motorcycle Rider Course and pass the Motorcycle Riding Skills Test will be given a Certificate of Completion and a badge.
  • For applicants 17 years of age, a motorcycle safety course waiver form must be signed by both the student and his/her parents.

Documentary Requirements

  • Photocopies of Driver’s License or Student’s Permit (if available, but not necessarily a requirement)
  • Barangay clearance
  • Certificate of Employment (if employed)
  • Medical certificate/health declaration
  • Signed waiver form if the applicant is 17 years old
