MMDA replaces countdown timers with smart traffic lights in Metro Manila

The new system uses sensors to adjust traffic light timing based on the number of vehicles on the road.

Drivers in Metro Manila will no longer see countdown timers at intersections. The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has finished switching to a new adaptive traffic light system at 96 intersections across the region.

MMDA Chair Don Artes said the new system uses sensors to adjust traffic light timing based on the number of vehicles on the road. Loop detectors placed under the road track traffic flow and change the lights in real time, helping ease congestion, especially during off-peak hours.

Artes added that while the countdown timers are gone, the standard warning signal remains: five blinks, followed by three seconds of yellow and red lights to help drivers prepare for a stop.

Some drivers have raised concerns about the removal of countdown timers. On social media, several said the change could cause confusion and lead to more traffic violations, especially with the No Contact Apprehension Policy in effect.

Despite the criticism, the MMDA says the new system will improve traffic flow and reduce delays at intersections.
