X formerly Twitter now allows NSFW adult content with recent policy update

Previously, X neither allowed nor banned adult content.

X, formerly known as Twitter, has updated its policies to allow users to share NSFW (not safe for work) adult content.

In the updated policy, X clarifies its stance on adult material. Previously, the platform existed in a grey area, neither explicitly allowing nor banning such content. Now, users can freely post consensually produced adult nudity or sexual behavior, as long as it’s properly labeled and not displayed prominently on profiles or banners.

X emphasizes user autonomy and artistic freedom in its reasoning behind the policy shift. “We believe that users should be able to create, distribute, and consume material related to sexual themes as long as it is consensually produced and distributed,” the updated guidelines state.

Adult content will be hidden behind warnings, and inaccessible to users under 18 or those who haven’t verified their age. Additionally, X prohibits the sharing of exploitative, non-consensual, or obscene content, and offers clear reporting channels for violations.

X defines adult content as “any consensually produced and distributed material depicting adult nudity or sexual behavior that is pornographic or intended to cause sexual arousal.” This includes AI-generated, photographic, or animated content such as cartoons, hentai, or anime.

It remains to be seen how this decision will impact X’s user base and overall platform culture.
