A new wave of scams has emerged, targeting unsuspecting individuals with threats of suspending their SIM card registrations. The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) has issued a warning about these fraudulent calls.
According to the CICC, scammers are posing as Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) employees and even used the name Nikki Garcia in one case. They are contacting individuals with claims of SIM card violations and threatening to suspend their registrations.
CICC Executive Director Alexander K. Ramos urges the public to ignore suspicious calls. “We are once again appealing to the public to ignore calls from suspicious or anonymous callers,” he said. “Please be alert at all times and do not be deceived by people who pretend to be from DICT or any other government agency.”
SIM card registration is now mandatory under the Republic Act No. 11934. As of July 30, 2023, over 113 million SIM cards have been registered in the Philippines.
If you or anyone you know has become a victim of such scams, you can report the incidents to the Inter-Agency Response Center Hotline 1326.
