The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) has issued a warning against fraudulent SIM registration services. This advisory comes as the Philippines observes the second anniversary of Republic Act No. 11934, also known as the SIM Registration Act.
The CICC expressed concern over the proliferation of social media accounts that claim to offer seamless SIM registration for all networks at a minimal fee.
One such social media account, allegedly affiliated with DITO Telecommunity, tried to attract customers with this line: “SIM card registration available po. PM lang po sa gusting magregister Jan. all network po.”
DITO has since denied any association with the account and emphasized its strict adherence to the SIM Registration Act.
Please be reminded that SIM registration is a personal and mandatory process. Users must register with their respective networks by presenting a valid government-issued ID and taking a selfie.
As of July 30, 2023, a total of 113,969,014 SIM cards have been registered out of the 168,016,400 in circulation.
Those with questions or concerns regarding SIM registration can contact the Inter-Agency Response Center hotline at 1326. The hotline is available 24/7, including weekends and holidays.
The SIM Registration Act aims to promote responsible use of SIM cards and empower law enforcement agencies to combat crimes involving the use of mobile phones. It also seeks to enhance cybersecurity and protect citizens from scams and other mobile-based crimes
The law mandates all SIM users to register their SIM cards with their respective networks by providing a valid government-issued ID and a selfie.
