Google has begun rolling out new security features designed to safeguard your Android device from theft. These features leverage Google AI and device sensors to detect when your phone is snatched from your hand and immediately lock it, safeguarding your data from unauthorized access.
Originally announced in May, the new security features have started to reach Android users. These include:
- Theft Detection Lock uses Google AI to determine if someone snatches your phone from your hand and tries to run, bike, or drive away. If it detects a common motion associated with theft, the device is immediately locked, blocking access to your apps and data.
- Offline Device locks your phone even if the thief attempts to disconnect it from the internet. Android can recognize other signs that your device has been stolen from you.
- Remote Lock adds another layer of protection by allowing you to lock your device remotely using your phone number. This feature is particularly useful if you discover that your phone is no longer with you and can’t remember your Google password to access Find My Device.
Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock will be available on devices running Android 10 or later through an update on Google Play services this year. Google has begun rolling out the new features in batches, so they may not be immediately available to all users yet.
