To combat the rising threat of online scams in the Philippines, Google has introduced a new security feature for Android devices: Enhanced Google Play Protect. This launch, which coincides with Safer Internet Day, is part of Google’s broader initiative to protect users from the dangers of sideloaded apps.

For those unaware, sideloaded apps are those downloaded and installed from unofficial third-party sources, rather than the secure Google Play Store. These apps, often in the form of APK (Android Package Kit) files, bypass Google’s security checks, potentially exposing users to risks like malware, privacy breaches, and lack of updates.
Enhanced Google Play Protect offers real-time scanning to better protect users against the dangers of sideloaded apps. It is designed to detect malicious apps that use sophisticated techniques such as AI-driven evasion methods. This feature has already proven its effectiveness in countries like India, Thailand, Singapore, Brazil, and now, the Philippines.
Since its implementation on February 10, Enhanced Play Protect has successfully blocked over 3.2 million sideloaded app install attempts in the Philippines. This translates to substantial financial savings and increased user safety.

In addition to the new security feature, Google is collaborating with local content creators. This year, EduCreator Coach Lyqa is debunking cybersecurity myths through a new YouTube video. Past partnerships have included collaborations with the popular Filipino band Ben&Ben to spread the message of internet safety through music.
Google is also expanding its #YOUTHink media literacy campaign by releasing an Ilocano-language version. This initiative aims to equip more Filipinos with the knowledge to combat misinformation and is currently available in Filipino, English, and Cebuano.
