Netflix stops casting to TVs and streaming devices

Casting will work for older Chromecasts and select smart displays

Netflix has quietly made a change that affects how you watch shows on your TV. The streaming giant has disabled casting from phones to most TVs and streaming devices. This includes Google TV Streamer and newer Chromecast models.

If you’re using an older Chromecast without a remote, casting will still work. But for everything else, the option is gone. And it doesn’t matter what plan you’re on. Free, basic, or premium, the restriction applies to all.

As of writing, these are the only devices Netflix casting supports:

  • Chromecast 3rd gen or older (did not come with a physical remote)
  • Google Nest Hub Smart Display
  • Select cast-enabled Vizio TVs
  • Select cast-enabled Compal TVs

This update comes alongside other changes on the platform. Netflix recently updated its Moments feature to make sharing clips easier, started testing an AI chatbot to help you find shows, and added HDR10+ support on Samsung’s 2025 TVs. The company also raised prices again after the success of Squid Game 2.

For now, casting only works on older hardware. Netflix hasn’t said if this is permanent or if more restrictions are coming.
