DaVinci Resolve adds photo editing, takes on Lightroom

Blackmagic Design has expanded DaVinci Resolve beyond video editing with version 21, adding a new Photo Page that puts it in direct competition with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. The update is now available as a free public beta for macOS, Windows, and Linux, while the Studio edition goes for $295.

The Photo Page brings non‑destructive editing for still images, with support for RAW files from Sony, Canon, Nikon, and Fujifilm cameras. Tools like color grading, masking, cropping, and sharpening, features Resolve users already know from video, are now available for photos.

Plug‑ins, LUTs, and Resolve FX also work with images, giving photographers access to advanced workflows inside the same app.

For organization, Resolve offers a LightBox view to browse albums, filters for ratings and flags, and the ability to import catalogs from Adobe Lightroom. AI features include Magic Mask for quick subject isolation and UltraSharpen to improve low‑resolution shots.

Resolve also supports tethered shooting with Sony and Canon cameras, allowing live previews and direct control of exposure, ISO, and white balance.

On the video side, Resolve 21 adds AI‑powered search, text‑to‑speech, and facial editing tools, further integrating photo and video production in one application.

This move effectively makes Resolve a viable platform for creators who want both image and video editing in one place.
