President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. renewed his call to revive the nuclear energy program in his fifth State of the Nation Address, citing the country’s energy crisis. He said nuclear power could help secure energy supplies and lower electricity costs, adding that the Philippines already uses nuclear technology in medicine, farming, water filtration, and plastic recycling.
Marcos also pointed to gains in petroleum service contracts and hydrogen power projects as part of the government’s energy plan. He stressed that nuclear power would be rolled out with strict safety rules and that its benefits would be explained clearly to the public.
The president said nuclear energy could provide a stable option for households and businesses facing high electricity bills and unreliable supply. He noted that the country must diversify its energy sources to meet growing demand.
Marcos assured that transparency and safety will guide the program, aiming to build public trust. He added that while nuclear technology is not new to the Philippines, it could now play a bigger role in solving the energy crisis.
