Microsoft pushed out the Windows 11 KB5120998 update. The optional preview update moves version 25H2 to Build 26200.9278 and 24H2 to Build 26100.9278. You can get it through Windows Update or download the offline installer.
The update adds a movable taskbar. You can now place it at the top, left, right, or bottom of your screen. A smaller taskbar option is also available. The Start menu is now resizable, with choices for small, large, or automatic. You can turn off sections like Pinned, Recent, or All Apps, and even hide your profile details.
Search has been improved. You can now disable Bing and Microsoft Store results, showing only local files and apps. Performance also gets a boost.
The system tray loads faster, File Explorer’s Home tab opens quicker, scrolling is smoother, and icons and menus respond better.
The update is big, around 4.8GB to 5GB, because monthly packages include AI models even if they don’t apply to all PCs. Microsoft says the features will roll out gradually and will also be part of the September 8, 2026 Patch Tuesday release.
