The PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group is pushing for a regulatory body to oversee social media and gaming platforms. The move comes after school shooting incidents in Tacloban and Zamboanga, which police linked to violent online content.
Maj. Gen. Wilson Asueta said the body could work like the MTRCB. He explained it could be set up through legislation or an executive order for faster rollout.
The PNP believes stricter rules are needed to protect children and young users from harmful material. They are also studying measures from other countries, including Australia’s ban on social media for users under 16.
The plan is part of wider efforts to improve online safety. Lawmakers and agencies are expected to review the proposal and discuss how it can be enforced without limiting free expression.

If approved, the new body would set standards for content moderation and accountability across platforms. It would also give government agencies more power to act against harmful online trends.
