The National Privacy Commission (NPC) has issued show cause orders to Meta, Roblox, Reddit, and Discord for failing to register under the Data Privacy Act. The regulator said these platforms must explain why they have not complied with rules that cover companies handling personal data of Filipinos.
Registration is required for organizations that process sensitive information. NPC explained that this step ensures accountability and transparency in how user data is managed. Without registration, platforms risk penalties and possible restrictions in the country.
The crackdown comes after recent school shootings involving minors, which raised alarms about online grooming, extremist content, and child exploitation. NPC stressed that youth safety and privacy are top priorities. The agency said it will step up monitoring of platforms that collect and process personal data.
At the same time, the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) ordered Reddit and Discord to set up local offices and appoint representatives within 24 hours. The government also met with Meta and Roblox to form a technical working group focused on child safety, faster takedowns, and stronger age checks.
