Review: Crumpler Flock of Horror Laptop and Tablet Bag

OPPO Reno12 F 5G Coming Soon

Crumpler is known for being very creative when it comes to naming its products.  In this blog alone, I’ve reviewed bags with the weird names like The Rampaging Mob, The Vegetable, Dry Red No. 5, 4 Million Dollar Home, 5 Million Dollar Home, The Barney Rustle Blanket, Western Lawn and The Hoax.  I’ve even reviewed accessories named The Noose, The Limpet and The Carrot.  Crumpler sometimes reveals the inspiration for these names but if you’re someone like me who doesn’t care how product names are chosen, you’d rather just learn something about the bag than learn about the name.

The new Crumpler product that landed in my doorsteps is called the Flock of Horror.  Don’t get the name of this bag lead you into thinking it’s something only reserved for the Halloween.  It’s not.  It’s actually an everyday bag that qualifies as a messenger or sling bag, with a twist, literally.  Crumpler’s The Flock of Horror is a travel laptop bag with a unique fold-top opening that gives it a distinct hipster look.  This is not your ordinary, boring laptop bag.  It aims to be different and it simply succeeds.  The Flock of Horror is actually a smaller version of the Pinnacle of Horror.  Both bags have the same design and the same features but the Flock of Horror is slimmer in terms of width.  Specifically, while the Pinnacle of Horror has a width of 16.1 inches, the Flock of Horror has a width of 14.9 inches.   They both have the same 10.6-inch height.

The Flock of Horror does not only fit a laptop, it also has a side pocket that can store your tablet, be it an iPad, an Android tablet or a Windows 8 tablet.  All in all, the Flock of Horror has four storage zones.  It has a zippered top opening which is the main compartment that has a full width zippered internal utility pocket.  The second storage zone is the afore-mentioned soft-lined tablet compartment.  The third one is the vertical opening zippered front pocket and the fourth zone is the reinforced side accessory loop.

The bag’s rear compartment, the one that fits a tablet, is lined with brushed nylon so your device is protected from scratches.  It’s also an easy access pocket which is very accessible in case you need to get your tablet out for quick use.  In my tests, this compartment fits the iPad snugly and even Samsung’s Ativ Windows 8 tablet.  In fact, this compartment fits slim laptops like the MacBook Air.  If you must have your device always available, this will become your favorite compartment.

The Flock of Horror’s unique styling comes from the fold-top opening.  When the opening is folded, the bag looks cool and trendy.  This styling is actually not just for aesthetic reasons.  It gives the users a huge storage compartment when they need it but when they don’t the top just folds to the side.   The fold-top opening features a combination of clasp and zipper closure so your device is definitely secure but you also have an easy access to it.  The main compartment actually fits 14-inch laptops, but that would mean you won’t be able to fold the top opening and the laptop is stored vertically.

For carrying comfort, Crumpler’s The Flock of Horror makes sure your shoulder doesn’t take much of the pressure with the use of a removable shoulder pad.   The length of the strap is adjustable so you can get the length you’re comfortable with.   In my use, the strap proved to be highly versatile and easily adjustable.  The padding is also soft on the shoulder so even when you have this bag on for a long period of time, you won’t easily feel the stress on your shoulder.

The Flock of Horror comes in three color choices — Black, Rifle Green and Red.  The black one featured on this review is the safest and the red one is the loudest.  It all comes to personal taste and preference but you’ll never go wrong with the black-colored one.

Crumpler used water-resistant materials, including the fold-top opening and the zippers, so that means even in wet conditions, your devices are protected.   These materials are also durable and the joining and stitching are said to be reinforced on stress points.  Crumpler believes so much in the durability of its products so it offers a lifetime guarantee against defective materials or workmanship.  So if the bag breaks under normal use, Cumpler fixes it or replaces it, no questions asked.

All in all, Crumpler’s Flock of Horror is a very versatile laptop and tablet bag.  It has four storage zones that you can use in any manner you want to.  It has a special pocket for a tablet and the main compartment fits a medium-sized laptop.  There’s also a special side pocket that can hold your documents or other accessories.  The Flock of Horror is priced at P4,550.  It’s not cheap but for this price, you’ll get a top-notch product that’s not only durable but also hip and trendy.

Crumpler’s Flock of Horror is available at Crumpler stores found in Trinoma, Bonifacio High Street, SM Megamall and Robinsons Manila.
