Yesterday was a special day for Apple hopefuls. The Cupertino tech giant announced its expected update of the iconic smartphone that changed it all with the announcement of the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 6S Plus.
iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus
Traditionally, S updates are mostly incremental and this year is no different. The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus has the same screen size (4.7 inch and 5.5 inch) and resolution (1080p) as its predecessors. The design and and overall looks are the same as well, with the exception of new color options. There are now four to choose from: silver, gold, space gray, and rose gold.
The updates came mostly on the inside. Both come with the 64-bit Apple A9 chipset, said to have 70% faster CPU performance and 90% GPU performance over the last generation A8. The camera has been upgraded to a 12MP sensor for the main, now capable of 4K recording, and a 5MP front cam for selfie aficionados. The fingerprint scanner was also upgraded for faster identification.
One of the more celebrated updates the new iPhones have is the addition of the 3D Touch functionality. It allows the iPhones to differentiate between a deep press and a tap. The new functions allows for added dimensions when interfacing with iOS, such as calling up commands or shortcuts, depending on duration of your touch.
The new iPhones also come with new accessories. Among them are the natural leather and silicone cases. And the new Lightning Docks with color-matched metallic finishes.
Price and Availability
In the US, the iPhone 6S starts at USD 199 with a 2 year contract for the 16GB model, while the iPhone 6S Plus starts at USD 299. The 64GB variants are up USD100, making it USD299 and USD399 respectively. The 128GB model raises the price by another USD100 for both.
The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus will be available in the US starting September 25. Availability locally won’t be too far off from that date.
That’s it for the new iPhones. As expected, the updates are incremental, but significant. The new iPhones are faster, have more features, and reportedly stronger (the frame has been reinforced with better aluminum grade to prevent bendgate from happening again). Although it would have been better if they started with 32GB of storage (why just 16GB?), it still retained the good looks and performance that people love about it.
