Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL

Google finally unveiled this year’s “made by Google” smartphones. The Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL come with top of the line specs. These devices are made to showcase the company’s vision of what Android should be.

Camera

No dual cameras here. Google opted to go with a single lens setup for the new Pixels’ cameras. And that’s okay. The previous Pixel phones had great cameras. There’s no reason to doubt the quality of these as well. Both the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL come with 12.2MP rear cameras with an f/1.8 lens, optical image stabilization, PDAF, laser autofocus, and a dual LED flash. It uses a 1/2.6-inch sensor with a 1.4 um pixel size.

The front camera an 8MP sensor with a 1/3.2-inch sensor. It can shoot 1080p videos.

Display

The Google Pixel 2 comes with a 5-inch OLED display with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 and a pixel density of 441 ppi. It is protected by Gorilla Glass 5, and has a new always-on display feature.

The Pixel 2 XL has a 6-inch quad HD P-OLED display with a 2880 by 1440 resolution and a 538 ppi pixel density. It features small bezels and a tall 18:9 aspect ratio, resulting in a large-screened phone without becoming too big.

Internals: Processor, RAM, Storage, Etc.

Both devices come with a powerful octa-core Snapdragon 835 processor paired with 4GB of RAM and an Adreno 540 graphics unit. There are two storage options of 64GB or 128GB, with no provision for a microSD card slot. The two also runs on stock or pure Android 8.0 Oreo.

The Pixel 2 has a 2,700 mAh battery, while the Pixel 2 XL packs a bigger 3,520 mAh. Both are non-removable and has rapid charging.

Other Specs

As for the rest of the specs, you’ll also find a rear mounted fingerprint scanner, dual front firing speakers (always a plus), USB Type-C port, a metal unibody build, and IP67 Dust and Water resistance.

The Pixel 2, which was built by HTC, also has an Active Edge feature. It uses edge sensors which work like the one found on the HTC U11. You can squeeze the sides to launch Google Assistant. It also means squeezing too hard while holding the phone can activate it as well.

Price

The Google Pixel 2 has a retail price of USD649 for the 64GB, and USD749 for the 128GB. The Pixel 2 XL, on the other hand, comes in at USD849 for the 64GB, and USD949 for the 128GB.

Too bad these devices won’t make it to the Philippines. They’re one of the best to rock stock Android. If they do, however, it would cost an arm and a leg. Converted to Philippine Peso, the Pixel 2 would cost roughly Php34,000 and Php39,000, respectively. While the Pixel 2 XL going as high as Php44,000 and Php49,000. Those looking to get one in the Philippines can expect it to show up in unofficial channels.
