OPPO F7 Philippines Initial Review

OPPO lent us a test unit last week, and I’ve been using it for a couple of days now. Today, we’re going to give it a quick look before we proceed to a full on review, which will be coming in the next couple of week.

So far, I like what I’m seeing.

Unboxing

The OPPO F7 comes in a typical white box with a cardboard sleeve that features the phone’s profile, name, and the 25MP emblazoned to indicate the front camera’s capacity.

The handset comes with what you usually find in an OPPO smartphone package — a jelly case, a pair of earphones, a travel charger, a microUSB cable, some documentation, and the SIM eject tool.

The jelly case has precise cut-outs for the camera, the fingerprint sensor, and the ports. It is slightly harder to put on the phone, because the lip goes over and tightly envelopes the thin bezels all around. It is also raised, so the display is protected should you place the phone face down on a surface.

First Look: Design

The F7 comes in a sleek body with what looks like a glass front and back, and a polycarbonate frame. The front is mostly all display with thin bezels and the notch. The notch is smaller than the one on the iPhone X, and houses the front camera, earpiece, and the sensors.

The back of the phone is topped with a glossy glass-texture panel, along with the oval shaped fingerprint scanner, the single rear camera, and the OPPO branding. The fingerprint scanner has a silver ring that traces its shape, and has a different shine than the rest of the back’s finish. Also take note of the camera bump.

The display takes up mostly the whole front and has rounded corners. It’s a nice touch, as the detail adds to the phone’s clean and attractive look. One thing I noticed on most OPPO phones though, is that the screen is slightly elevated from the body, which detracts from the seamlessness of the design.

Camera

The OPPO F7 comes with a 25MP front camera, a f/2.0 aperture lens, a new Vivid mode, and AR stickers. The rear camera has a 16MP sensor with an f/1.8 lens, PDAF, AI Scene. Again, the camera bump is still there, with no attempts to hide or minimize it.

Internals and Benchmarks

The F7 is powered by a 2.0GHz octa-core MediaTek P60 processor paired with 4GB of RAM and a Mali-G72 MP3 graphics chip. The P60 is a “super mid-range premium” chip manufactured using the TSMC 12nm process, and is comprised of four Cortex-A73 (2GHz) cores and four Cortex-A53s (2GHz), a Mali-G72 MP3 graphics unit, and an AI processing unit.

Initial AnTuTu Benchmark results are impressive. The phone got an average of around 140,000 points on three runs.

Impressions

So far, so good. I like what OPPO has done with the latest Selfie Expert. The OPPO F7 is impressive in many ways. The phone has a beautiful and sleek design, plus the Solar Red color is eye-catching. As expected, the selfie camera is very promising, as is the performance and gaming capability.

That’s about it for my initial review. If I somehow managed to convince you to get one at this point, pre-orders for the F7 will begin on April 12, 2018.
