Redmi now a sub-brand of Xiaomi; Teases 48MP smartphone

Xiaomi recently announced that Redmi will become an independent sub-brand of the company. The announcement was made on Xiaomi’s official website which includes an event to be held in Beijing, China on January 10, 2019.

Interestingly, the Redmi is also teasing what looks like a 48MP camera which could launch at the upcoming event. The number 4,800 can be seen in the shadow of the brand Redmi on the image above. This is usually the convention used by TENAA to denote megapixels with 4,800 referring to 48MP.

Last December 2018, Xiaomi president Lin Bin teased a 48MP camera (seen HERE) on Chinese social media platform Weibo. He could very well have been referring to a Redmi phone. Or most probably, both brands will have versions of it with different price points.

In any case, Redmi as a sub-brand will go head-to-head with other sub-brands from Huawei and OPPO (Honor and Realme, respectively) and compete in the entry level to midrange space where price and good specs meet.
