Internet speedtest company Ookla recently awarded PLDT and Smart the Philippines’ fastest fixed and mobile networks in 2018.
In Ookla’s latest report (Q3 – Q4 2018), Smart achieved a Speed Score of 15.57 with average download speeds of 17.86 Mbps and average upload speeds of 8.61 Mbps. The results are based on 2,186,540 user-initiated tests using the Speedtest app on LTE-capable devices on the Philippines.
PLDT, on the other hand, got a Speed Score of 18.57, with download speeds of 52.28 Mbps and upload speeds of 55.95 Mbps. The results for this are based on 27,221,777 user-initiated speed tests.

In Q1 – Q2 of the same year, the Speed Score of Smart was 14.98 and PLDT with 17.31. The telcos achieved marked improvements compared to the first half of 2018.
According to Oookla’s country reports, Smart posted big leads in key cities like Quezon City, Makati, and Manila. While PLDT leads in Quezon City, Pasig, and Manila.
Speed Scores take into account download and upload speed test results to rank network speed performance.
PLDT is investing USD 5 billion to improve its fixed and wireless networks. In 2018, the company spent PHP 58 billion for capital expenditure.
