OPPO Reno hands-on and first impressions

The OPPO Reno is set to launch in the Philippines on June 19, 2019. This is the first handset in the Reno lineup and it looks like a winner.

Here, we take a quick look at the OPPO Reno with its shark’s fin pop-up selfie camera, premium stylings, and midrange internals.

Design and Build

OPPO has definitely levelled up the way they design smartphones. The OPPO Reno is gorgeous. It has a sleek body with clean lines and soft edges. It feels great in the hand too, thanks to its smooth back and contoured shape. The phone actually feels more premium than what its price lets on.

Up front, you have a 19.5:9 6.4-inch AMOLED panoramic display. It has no notch with narrow bezels, resulting in an astounding 93.1% screen-to-body ratio. Critics will probably call out the chin, but it’s small enough not to be a bother.

What’s in the box? Besides the Reno — a soft case, a pair of earbuds, a USB Type-C cable, and the VOOC travel charger.

Turn the phone over and you have that sexy glass back. OPPO’s new vertical streak design cuts through the middle. You’ll find the OPPO logo and the dual 48MP + 5MP cameras here. OPPO said they used an anti-fingerprint layer on the glass panel. It’s not as effective as they let on. But it does have a matte texture that at least makes fingerprints less noticeable.

OPPO Reno: If you’re looking for the LED flash, its on the motorized Shark’s Fin pop-up module.

The rear cameras have no hump which is impressive considering the module of dual 48MP + 5MP setup. It is flushed against the panel. In addition, you’ll notice that there’s a small nub right below the cameras. OPPO calls it the O-Dot — its main function is to slightly raise the back to protect the lenses.

The power button is on the right, while the volume rocker is on the left. At the bottom you have the speaker grill, a mic, and, at long last, a USB Type-C port.

Now, we go to the Reno’s highlight feature, the motorized shark’s fin pop-up 16MP selfie camera. The design, OPPO shares, was chosen because of how unique it looks and how it makes the phone stand out. I think the module’s thickness and design make it more durable. According to OPPO, the shark’s fin module can work for up to 5 years, assuming its used 100 times per day. Only time will tell if this holds true.

The Reno boasts a 48MP main and a 5MP secondary depth cameras. There’s also a 3,765mAh battery. It has VOOC Super Charge fast charging support.

First Impressions

No doubt about it, the OPPO Reno is a gorgeous device. On design and build, OPPO outdid themselves with this. With basic navigation, the phone is fast and fluid. The in-display fingerprint scanner is quick, so is the motorized pop-up camera when it rises. I like the color way of the review unit — Ocean Green. It is unique and beautiful.

If there’s one knock against the smaratphone, it’s (expectedly) the price. The OPPO Reno will retail for PHP 26,990, which critics will most probably call out (mainly because of the processor). In my opinion, though, it’s not that bad.

Before you chastise me for the comment, hear me out. For the price, you get a lot of value — great design, a 48MP main camera, a 16MP selfie shooter, Gorilla Glass 6 front, Gorilla Glass 5 back, a USB Type-C port, a headphone jack, and VOOC Super Charge. In this case, the sum is definitely more than its parts.

The OPPO Reno is priced at PHP 26,990 in the Philippines. Pre-orders starts on June 15 to 20, 2019. It will be available in stores nationwide starting June 21. The phone will also be available online, exclusively on Lazada.
