Canalys: Philippines’ smartphone market is the second largest in SEA in Q2

Smartphone shipments in the Philippines grew 4% with 4.4 million shipments, becoming the second largest market in Southeast Asia in Q2 2022, according to Canalys. Indonesia remained the largest market in SEA, with 37% share and 9.1 million shipments.

In the Philippines, the smartphone market grew by 4% as the country slowly recovered from the pandemic and started opening up in Q2. This, no doubt, was helped by the easing of COVID related restrictions and people going out to malls again.

The top smartphone brand in the Philippines in Q2 2022 is realme, who retook the spot from Transsion (Tecno Mobile, Infinix Mobile, Itel). The growth was backed by the strong market performance of the C35 series and the narzo series, along with several other releases.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi and OPPO grew 10% and 55% quarter-on-quarter, respectively. Xiaomi’s growth was due to the popularity of its Redmi 10 series which saw success in its offline channels. Transsion’s share dipped to 17% in Q2, but it expects to bounce back as it gains distributor confidence.

Malaysia also saw an increase of in smartphone market by 6% with 2.4 million shipments. Thailand and Vietnam, on the other hand, saw declines of 14% and 32% quarter-on-quarter, respectively.

The overall smartphone market in Southeast Asia dropped by 7% in Q2 2022.
